Moving to Canada from the United States involves a certain amount of paperwork and documentation to ensure a smooth transition. You’ll have to work with your relocation coordinator when moving goods into Canada.
Canadians returning to Canada from the US will need the following documents:
Non-residents moving to Canada from the US will need:
The skilled team of movers and packers will load your belongings in the US and safely transport them across the border. You will need to work with your assigned relocation coordinator to personally clear the goods being transferred from the USA to Canada. As your movers, we will not be permitted to deliver your possessions to your new home until you meet your relocation coordinator at the Canadian customs facility nearest to your new location. You won’t be able to send a 3rd party on your behalf, you have to clear the shipment personally.
The process for moving to the States from Canada is made simple because when your goods cross the border in the moving van, the driver will clear customs on your behalf. To do this they will need:
When exporting a vehicle from the USA to Canada with QMM, a relocation coordinator will support you through the process. Please note that the US border will need to be notified of your crossing 72 hours before the move. You’ll need to send the following documents to your relocation coordinator well in advance of your cross-border move:
Your relocation coordinator can act as your customs broker and send in the necessary documents for the exportation of your vehicle on your behalf. They will send you back an ITN number which will be needed for reference at the border.
Once you’ve exported your vehicle from the US, you will drive over to the Canadian customs office located at the same border crossing. There you will import your vehicle into Canada using the same documents.
If you are a Canadian citizen importing a vehicle purchased in the USA on a work visa, some taxes and duties may apply which will be due at the time of clearance. Once your vehicle has been cleared at Canadian customs, you have 30 days to register and formally import the vehicle into Canada.
When it comes to shipping a vehicle from Canada to USA, you will be required to gather the following documents:
If you are a US citizen moving with a car bought in Canada while on a work permit, some duties and taxes may apply.
Dogs and cats older than 3 months old can cross the border into Canada without quarantine, but they must carry proof of a rabies vaccination. A health certificate from a veterinarian is also recommended. When travelling with dogs, you’ll need to pay attention to any breed restrictions like the ban on pitbulls in Ontario. When crossing the border into America, be aware of the new entry requirements for dogs that say you’ll need the CDC Dog Import Form if your dog has been only in countries that are dog rabies-free or low-risk in the 6 months. This new rule is effective 1st August 2024. The rules for other types of pets like birds, reptiles and small mammals may vary.
